20. -LLA -verbs

There is a group of verbs in the Finnish language, whose to-form ends in -lla. -lla can mean doing something many times, for a long time or doing something in a relaxed way or it can just be an ending without any meaning. 

For example:

käydä       - visit

kävellä     - walk

katsoa       - look

katsella     - watch

laulaa        - sing

laulella      - keep singing in a relaxed way

istua          - sit

istuskella   - sit around

ajaa              to drive

ajella            to drive around

When these verbs are inflected, the verb stem ends in -LE instead of -LLA. 

kävellä         to walk

kävele         walk

katsella         to watch

katsele          watch

istuskella       to sit around

istuskele        sit around

The normal verb endings are added to this verb stem:

Kävellä               to walk

kävele                 walk

kävelen               I walk

kävelet                you walk

hän kävelee         he/she walks

kävelemme         we walk

kävelette             you walk

he kävelevät        they walk

Many common verbs are also inflected in the same way:

kuulla                to listen

tulla                   to come

tule                    come

tulen                   I come

tulet                    you come

hän tulee             he/she comes

tulemme              we come

tulette                  you come

he tulevat            they come

kuolla                    to die

kuole                    die

kuolen                   I die

kuolet                     you die

hän kuolee             he/she dies

kuolemme              we die

kuolette                  you die

he kuolevat             they
